ClamAV is still around, but I believe it is primarily for email
scanning.

I use AVG Free on the Windoze installation I keep around, it's been
getting kind of bloated though lately and takes a lot of resources when
running. It's been a while since I've heard of it mis-identifying system
software for a virus. I think all have had that problem on occasion
though.

I used to use McAffee, but got rid of it a few years ago when it was
having a problem with randomly deleting files. I heard they fixed it,
but I was already gone. It and Norton seem to have REAL bloat
reputations anymore anyway.

I've been hearing lately that Nod32 from Eset is worth looking at. Leo
LaPort (formally of Screensavers) has been pushing it anyway.

My personal favorite AV though, is my favorite Linux distro :-)
