Mixed octets can be fun when you're doing phone support helping people with=
 their home network.

They don't understand why 192.168.50.1 is different from 192.168.050.001, a=
nd if they're typing while you're on the phone they'll read back the IP add=
ress just as you think it should be because they don't mention the leading =
zeroes. Of course you can't see the screen, but when they tell you the res=
ults of the ping you asked them to do...

jfzuelow@mis-jz-lnx:~$ ping 192.168.050.001
PING 192.168.050.001 (192.168.40.1) 56(84) bytes of data.

It is worse if you're polite and trying not to treat them like idiots by te=
lling them "OK, now type a five. Now type a zero. Now type a period. Now =
type a one..."
