Well, the proviso to my earlier complaint: obviously a hard-coded
Makefile is fine if you throw in a configure script that rewrites the
Makefile for the environment. But if not (in my ever so humble opinion)
the Makefile should just specify the libraries and leave the paths up to
the environment.

The Makefile I was working with today had variables set for everything
- -- like home directories and usr/local directories. I don't think there
was any kind of build hierarchy either: basically, if anything changes,
just rebuild everything.
