Thank you everyone for the help. I ended up going with the popular rsync
+ encfs combination, which has proved overall rather convenient to
manage and easy to set up. I am getting backup services now through
evbackup, as their rates seem good and their services are *nix friendly.
(They provide "jail" root accounts on FreeBSD servers with ssh login and
rsync.)
