During the winter months I find the only recourse is anti-static
spray. I use it on my office floor mat and carpet, and it does the
trick. Stinks for a bit though.

Friend of mine just killed his trackball this way, or rather his
serial converter for an old Kensington Turbo Mouse. They last and last
otherwise.
