I'd definitely switch from exec to extend if your version supports it -
it's much less labor-intensive and it's where the project wants users to go.
$ snmpwalk -V

From the 5.2 release notes:
- improved version of "exec" extension directive - "extend":
supports multi-line output, configurable command input, SET
handling, a valid relocatable MIB output structure, etc
