In debian:
ftpd works pretty well. The only time you may need something else is if
you need to work with multiple users, get better logging if needed, or
do any more advanced FTP configuration.

vsftpd is pretty simple to set up as well, and makes it easy to set up
incoming files.

HTTP brings up and tears down connections pretty fast. If you already
have a web server on the system you are using I'd think you'd want to
set up a path alias and point it to the repo.
