[aklug] new scanner

I am used to consulting the appropriate Linux HCL list before buying
hardware. Buying a new scanner tried my patience. I wanted a new model
supported by Sane, mutually exclusive concepts. I bought an Epson
Perfection V300 which was 'supported' by Vuescan. After firing the
scanner up Vuescan directed me to
http://www.avasys.jp/lx-bin2/linux_e/scan/DL1.do to get a driver before
Vuescan would work. Once I installed the driver Vuescan worked but also
Xsane now worked. I wish Xsane would be more forthcoming with such
tidbits rather than silently failing, fortuneatly I had a license for
Vuescan that wasn't being used or I WOULD be PO'd :-)
