I've often said that the average user doesn't need much computing power. If all they're doing is writing e-mails and buying stuff online, they could get by with a super-bare-bones computer and a lightweight OS that points the user to his/her frequently-used applications. If not for its horrible interface and /optional/ keyboard, the WebTV concept might have actually worked out. chumby* seems to be the latest incarnation of that concept. Be nice if it had a keyboard, though; even a Chiclet-sized pop-out keyboard would be helpful for returning messages. That, I think, would be a great selling point for social networking addicts.

I have to wonder, though, why chumby's standard features include an accelerometer. Do they expect people to use chumby as a weapon?

  * All lowercase branding? That's almost as played-out as corporations who don't put any SpacesInTheirName.
