256 mb memory is a bit light.
I run KDE on 384 mb of memory and a PIII 600 box, everything works okay.
My workstation is faster so I do notice the lag times when opening &
closing apps & multi-tasking. OOwriter by itself works fine.

For the Mandrake box you could add additional USB storage, flash or
external drive, I would keep the OS and data separate.
