Thanks for all the suggestions, and to the archives :-)

Update:
I went with a Trendnet TEW-443PI, one of the cheaper ones at compusa. It
has an atheros chipset that madwifi supports, http://madwifi.org/. This
involves downloading module source code and compiling the module. This
presents a chicken and the egg issue, not the best solution if all you
have is a wireless connection. Since I had a wired connection I choose to
save $20 and go this route. The ralink chipset cards are natively
supported in the kernel, but cost more.

I use Debian which has the madwifi stuff packaged, then followed the
directions using the m-a, module assistant, method which worked perfectly
in Etch. It took no time at all after I spent lots of time getting up to
speed on wireless stuff :-), it was my first time, I am a slow adopter.
