I (foolishly) assumed that I could do a text-mode install using the
standard Install CD. Only after reviewing
ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download again did I spot the bit that says:

"Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD. This CD does not
include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer."

In my defense, it seems counter-intuitive that a text-mode installer
would be different enough that it wouldn't fit on the standard CD.

Also, the release notes say this, which may explain my slow install
performance:

"The minimum memory requirement for Ubuntu 7.04 is 256MB of memory.
With only the minimum amount of memory available, the installation
process will take longer than normal, but will complete successfully,
and the system will perform adequately once installed.

Guess how much RAM I have in this laptop? :) I gotta tell you,
though, "slow" here is *a day*. It's pretty crazy. Just the screen
refreshes for the install dialogs are taking minutes.

Double-shame on me for not reading the release notes first. Leif's
admonition was warranted. :)
