tty

I seem to have lost the access to the tty1-tty6 with the ctl alt
function keys only the gui is working, this is on a laptop that's
relatively new , have already tried a usb keyboard connected to it ,with
the same results.
 Any input would be appreciated

Using debian etch 64amd
