student pass Linux+ (2004), LPI1 and LPI2.

I can't speak for gentoo but lfs is geared to teach the user to build a
linux system from the ground up. You add all the pieces and parts and have
to compile everything yourself. I would recommend getting on their mailing
list, they are a nice group that will help you every step of the way.
