Being a bit tongue-in-cheek, I would say it is an old term.

It dates from the days when getting Linux on a machine was a major
project, and the joint cooperative efforts to do it were organized by
the geeks.

Today the emphasis is shifting toward the supremacy of masterful
applications, and the operating system sort of goes with the trade.
Live CDs, live thumb drives, virtual machines ... more and more options.

Most "newbies" focus on the productive results of applications, and
slowly come to understand that operating system are important. Presence
or absence of desirable games is a subject that looms large in many
circles.

This is from someone who has no speakers connected to either of his CAD
workstations; and no games whatsoever :-)
