Which is your preferred method of authentication?

Hi Everyone:

I am dealing with another issue now and I thought I
put this question out to see what people out there
think.

If you have a client that wishes to get into a
protected directory on a website via IE or Firefox, do
you authenticate via altering the apache httpd file
using htpasswd, or php or via a MySQL database?

I'm just curious. I am probably going to stick to
Apache because I know it best.
