the -dev gtkmm files help that problem, thanks
but...
then i tried to run ./make and got no such file,
i dont see directons to compile acovea-gtk, but the acovea back end uses

./configure
./make
./make install

the last few lines of output from ./config are

checking pkg-config is at least version 0.9.0... yes
checking for GTKMM... yes
configure: creating ./config.status
config.status: creating Makefile
config.status: creating src/Makefile
config.status: creating config.h
config.status: config.h is unchanged
config.status: executing depfiles commands

so i tried ./Make and ./Makefile w/ and w/o caps and the same in the src/
subdirectory, with and without sudo
nothing worked
could there be different directions for the acovea-gtk?
any suggestions on what to try?
