I have been wanting tom implement this for years, however I have
always been afraid of the reaction from non-techie email senders to a
TMDA protected system, also whitelisting for say amazon.com, etc..
which won't ever respond to tagged messages to verify itself.

To me this is the start to Email-NG and has been around for quite some
time. I have had some hybrid greylisting ideas in the past, merging
it with tagged responses via email headers as well as sending "Come
back soon" replies.
