Since the subject of modems comes up once in a while, thought I'd pass
along that I've found two reasonably priced modems that work with linux:
DIAMOND SupraMax SM56E 56Kbps External Fax Modem.
This one's a serial external available from newegg for $35 ($25 after
mailin). Seems to work as expected on all my boxes.
Stratitec IC56A 56K PCI Internal Modem.
This is a softmodem based on the Lucent (Agere) DSP1648C. I'm using
gentoo's ltmodem ebuild as drivers. Got this one from walmart on a
lark, since it advertised as being linux compatible. About $28 or so.
I put it in my gentoo itx box, and it seems to behave as expected, tho I
haven't given it much of a workout.
As always, YMMV, objects closer than they appear, all disclaimers apply,
use at your own risk, blahblah.
Anyone who puts a small gloss on a fundamental technology, calls it proprietary, and then tries to keep others from building on it, is a thief.
