Thanks for all the input.

One option was to partition the HD from a MAC with its fs.
Seemed like some problems with interchangeability there.

Since my main box is running varieties of Debian on intel, I partitioned the
USB drive with cfdisk using 0C for a vfat partition.
installed dosfstools and ran mkdosfs /dev/sda2.
The 1st MAC in question can read and write those files. Resource forks hang
out as directories but seem to work okay.
This system works for backing up data and since there are install cds for the
MAC that's all that's needed.
