Pairing has nothing to do with the memory and everything to do with the
motherboard. There's a lot of systems that require memory to be deployed in
banks (usually two or four slots at a a time) because memory is interleaved
within the bank for performance purposes. For that same reason you typically
must use identical DIMMs for each slot within a bank.
