I would look at Mepis (http://mepis.org/). I haven't used it in a
while, but when I used it last, I was really impressed on how easy it
was to install and use. Its debian based, so apt-get is there. It also
uses synaptic for package management, so users don't have to get into
the command line if the really don't want to. It seemed to be a good
distro for beginners.

Another debian-based distro to look at woud be Ubuntu
(http://www.ubuntulinux.org/). They just made a recent release. The
nice thing is they will ship you CDs for free. And they have broader
platform support than Mepis, incuding the all important amd64.

Both these distro, put a heavy emphasis on easy of use, and making
applications easy to find.

Of course, all that being said, I still keep going back to Gentoo. I
just can't give up my portage.
