gentoo emerge problem

I can emerge other projects just fine, but whenever I attempt to
emerge vi(m), I get this:

bozeman Backup # emerge vim
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 2) sys-libs/gpm-1.20.1-r4 to /
!!! Security Violation: A file exists that is not in the manifest.
!!! File: files/digest-gpm-1.20.1-r4

Ideas on how to clear this extra file that is preventing me from
installing the dependencies?
