actually, it does make sense.

GNU is a project to replace the closed-source-no-freedoms
UNIX with something that is compatible, open and free(dom).

It is a paradyme shift, and so was declared 'not unix'.
But what wasn't unix? This new project. Following the
tradition of recursive acronyms, the project was given
the name GNU.

There ya have it in a nutshell.
