High Memory Support

I upgraded my ram and had to enable high mem support in kernel 2.6.8.1
for all of it to be recognised. So, I made the changes, recompiled,
copied the kernel image to /boot and reloaded lilo. Lilo successfully
loaded the kernel, but nothing was being displayed on my screen after
the lilo screen faded. Lilo's default graphics mode is normal, I don't
have framebuffers enabled, I didn't mess with any drivers or graphics
settings, but that doesn't seem to matter. Despite the screen being
blank, the system seems to be fully functional. I am able to login and I
get a normal display when I start X, though when I shutdown X, I am
again without a display. I suppose the obvious solution would be to
disable high mem support, but that is not a viable option for me at the
moment. If any of you have an idea of what is causing this or how I
might solve it, I would appreciate any input. Thanks,

Art

There is in certain living souls
A quality of loneliness unspeakable,
So great it must be shared
As company is shared by lesser beings.
Such a loneliness is mine; so know by this
That in immensity
There is one lonelier than you.
