Try the Live-CD to see if you like it.
Then install on hard drive.

Downloaded and burned Knoppix 3.6 iso: KNOPPIX_V3.6-2004-08-16-EN.iso
Boot from CD
at boot prompt: knoppix26 lang=en
Let it load
Control+Alt+F2 to get a root console
type: knoppix-installer ( an older command was: knx-hdinstall)
Then: follow a few choices for a workable install.
Use the "Debian type install" to get an apt-get able install.

Wala! A Useable desktop install that looks like the Live-Cd that you initially
tried.
Plus you can add programs via apt-get.

I have done this on an old 500 MHz Compaq Presario..worked fine.
More details written up might make a good introduction to Linux.
Also I didn't partition anything. Need to do it with an eye to what might
cause a newbie angst.

Won't suit everyone. It seems, however, an easy introduction to Linux.
