Maxima and Xmaxima are another option and GPL.

Note Macsyma is the precurser of Maxima - may be some differences there.
Macsyma is not GPL.

Mathematica is spendy. However, that may not be a consideration.
I was impressed by a demo many years back, pre-Linux.
No experience on Mathematica on Linux.
