Systems Administrator/ Desktop Support The mission of OSDL
(www.osdl.org) - home to LinusTorvalds, the creator of Linux - is to
accelerate the growth and adoption of Linux. Founded in 2000 and
supported by a global consortium of IT industry leaders, OSDL provides
state-of-the-art computing & test facilities in the US, Japan & China
available to developers around the world. In this role you will
provide Linux and MS Windows desktop support to local and non-local
staff and will educate users about Open Source alternatives to MS
Windows applications.
This position requires: 3-5 yrs hands-on desktop support exper. in
both Linux and MS Windows environments. Linux and MS Windows exper.
including setting up mail clients, scripting, setting up proxies,
config. browsers, package mgmt, power mgmt config., wireless
networking config., dependency resolution & exp. setting up &
configuring common peripherals & PDAs. Linux skills must include
familiarity with X11, hardware and desktop software configuration,
writing macros, and exper. setting up and configuring dual-boot
(Linux-MS Windows) boxes. Desktop MS Windows exper. including
installation and configuration of common office applications, and
CYGWIN set up and configuration. Demonstrated ability to coach/educate
users one-onone or in small groups, and the ability to educate MS
Windows users about Open Source alternatives to common MS Windows
applications. Exposure to or familiarity with network and server set
up, configuration and related systems is helpful, but not req.
