Yup, had to drop GCI as my smarthost to get mail out.

I've also had lots of problems with my firewall getting flooded with traffic judging from the cable modem LEDs. I just drop any packets that aren't aimed at my specific IP address instead of logging them, so I can't compare logs. But probably the same thing.
