The CS department (technically the Math Dept) has a grand total of 3
*nix systems - one dual-boot Win/SuSE workstation, and two servers, one
ancient one - (coincidentally, the first *nix machine I ever sunk my
teeth into), and one brand new one. I'm not exactly sure what they run
- may be Linux, may be BSD, may be Unix. Oh, and one OS X workstation,
which is close enough :)
I've worked my way through the Bachelors program (graduating in less
than a month, hurrah!) using Linux, with the exception of databases
(used MS Access, could have used MySQL instead) and assembly (in DOS,
but it would be just as easy to teach/learn assembly in *nix)
Not only does UAA spend too much on new Windows licenses, and new
computers to run the latest version of Windows, the majority of CS
students have barely even touched Linux, let alone would be willing to
let go of their Visual Studio and point-and-click Java IDE's. That's
what the majority of companies are looking for though, I guess.
