Subject: Captive NTFS Read System

Hello LUGS:
A few days ago, a link was provided on the AKLUG list
regarding services to read/write NTFS. That link is
http://www.jankratochvil.net/project/captive/
I emailed the developer which the idea of
telling him about Win4Lin for entirely self-serving
reasons:
As a developer myself, it would suit my needs to
have win4lin support NTFS and windows XP, need
because *I need* to use XP, but because I need to
test deployments.
So it serves my purpose (and perhaps that of others)
to see an XP emulation on Linux - at win4lin
prices (as opposed to vmware prices)
Some of our 'conversation' might be of interest to
these lists. Especially his reference to Kinneret
http://www.linux-kinneret.org/about-en.html
So follows - to the best of my effort and with some
snipping - some comments we made to each other -
First Email:

I am aware of Win4Lin although I try all the other possibilities before
W32-related companies - I want to get as far away from the disgusting
MS-Windows code as possible even for my job.
Possible relicensing of Captive for their needs is not an option as Captive
depends on GPLed ReactOS.
Unfortunately my project tends to bring me mostly MS-Windows related offers.

OK, I am aware of it. Everyone always needs just Captive. :-)

I never found whether Win4Lin is VMware style emulation (emulated virtual
machine hardware) or just Wine style (API). In the case of VMware style my
project has no meaning for them.

Developer of Kinneret (a Knoppix derivate) was already integrating Captive into
it. :-)

It is pleasant to see the project has some attention. :-)
Currently I keep Win4Lin in mind although I try some other possibilities first.
Thanks for your tip.

And to conclude, I emailed him back to say (as far as I know) win4lin
is sort of a wine-styled API, but Jamie H might want to step in
here, 'cuz I believe he's pretty familiar with vmware.
