Check out the mii-diag program. You should be able to find it in a
google search (cannot remember the site). You can check and set the
speed.
You can hard wire it in /etc/modules.conf
alias eth0 3c59x
options 3c59x options=8 full_duplex=1
Take a look at the source for vaules of the options
