Greetings all,

(Sigh!) I had hardware problems: the PS/2 to Serial (7pin) addapter was
bad so the mouse didn't work. I had a Serial mouse that worked in the
past, but ??? Just on a lark, after the high schoolers had departed, I
tried a different adapter, and vallah! The Ethernet port (promised and
designated by the space manager) did not appear to be hot and I had no
test equipment other than the computer.

I was able to demonstrate the boot on a prepared ancient box with no
harddisk (the point being to show that Knoppix did not do anything to
the harddisk and that it had the capability to recognize some very
strange hardware). I was able to show the GUI (default KDE) with all the
text in German. I went to a teminal (ctl-alt-F2) and was able to
demonstrate that indeed, the keyboard was German (y and z reversed,
umlauted characters in both lower and upper case, and other
differences). I forgot the key combination to get the "at" sign (@)
however, so I just left that out of my presentation. I explained how the
CD could be used three ways: as an autostart cd-rom in Windows, as a
complete system (o/s, desktop, applications including an office suite
and ability to browse the Internet), and as a self contained system to
load on to the harddisk of a computer.

I distributed about 18 KNOPPIX v3.3 2003-09-DE CD's. Eight or nine went
to adults. Two men were attending an all language conference here in
Anchorage (Dimond HS?) starting this evening. They were with the Goethe
Institute and were quite interested in this edition of Knoppix as a help
in teaching German. One of the men apparently was from Germany. He asked
me if I was going to give a demonstration at this conference.

There was at least one HS teacher who sat through the mouseless
demonstration. There were five or six young lads with him. Each got a
CD. Finally, after I got the mouse working, I demonstrated to the just
retired head of the UAA Languages Department, Frau Professorin Doktor
Engle. She was impressed, took a CD, and indicated her husband was the
one who knew about computers.

I think we are on to something with Knoppix. fgd.
