box problem

Not quite sure how to describe this. I was doing some scanning this AM
and my box got tied up with a process to the point it wouldn't do
anything else. Drive access light was on solid. Couldn't access another
terminal to shut it down or anything as when I would attempt logging in
with another terminal, I couldn't get the password prompt.

When I rebooted, everything was OK for a couple of minutes. Then the
drive access light was on more and more until I could no longer access
the system again.

Rebooted once more and started checking logs for an unusually large one.
'lastlog' was in excess of 18M and full of nothing but '/tty1_|tty1'
(that first character is actually a divisor symbol, but I couldn't
figure out how to put that in my email).

I looked for and tried killing the one process dealing with tty1. I
couldn't kill it, but my box seems to be OK now. Don't know what will
happen when I reboot though.

Can anybody give me some pointers on troubleshooting this?
