Tim,
I went through some of the same issues.
 login file, user file, config files, permissions...
I am no expert but I was able to setup accounts and synchronize passwords
 with the use of webmin. It makes the job easier. GUI driven etc. download
 and install Webmin 1.07. (webmin.org)
You run it in your browser at http://localhost:10000/
Then go to servers tab and you will see samba listed there... with a whole
 lot more...
