Look for this as a reply to that story.
Same thing but different:

Passing though an airport security screening zone my brief case was
requested to be searched. I had a bad cold and was kind of groggy from the
cold meds the pharmacist had given me and said . "No problem", I had
sanitized it the day before. 80% of the time when I fly I have a firearm in
my baggage and on this trip it was an FN FAL. So I make sure that I don't
have any loose rounds rolling around. Low and behold three weapons were
found in the case. "You can't take these on board" said the screener. Why
not I asked. "Because they're guns". "No", I replied" they're hat pins".
To be precise one was a 2 inch long relief of a M-16A2 and the other 2 were
1 inch long relief's of a M-9 and 1911 pistols. All three were attached to
a piece of paper to keep them from being damaged. "Maybe you should consult
with a supervisor on this" I suggested. The supervisor came over and
examined the evidence and said here needed to talk to someone. He returned
a few minutes later and had the screener put the pins back in my case and
asked me not to take them out while we were in flight.

Later on I had to wonder what would have happened if I hadn't been doped up
on Cold Medications and in no mood for a confrontation. I had spent 7
months on active duty with the National Guard this winter and was trained as
a screener, I qualified most of the states personnel that went to the
airports with the use of the M-9. And I had spent many hours going over the
Airport Security Bill in my capacity as the J-3/5 NCO. I am also the team
captain for our units combat pistol team, and two weeks before had taken
them to the national match in Little Rock AR.

As a mater of fact I started to think about that as I walked off from the
screening area. If they were afraid that my hat pins would upset some
people on the flight, would they have made me take off my shirt also? The
sweat shirt I was wearing had on the right breast, WPW (Winston P. Wilson)
Match with an illustrations of a M-60 gunner in prone, and on the back
"Winston P. Wilson 2002 Combat Match, Rifle Pistol, Machine Gun, Sniper" and
the list of the 12 or so other nations that had teams competing there.
Along with two large illustrations of soldiers firing M-16s in full combat
gear.

Having now severed in 3 military branches for a total of 29 years, I am a
little sensitive about civil liberties vs. security. Had the screening staff
not had been properly trained in customer confrontation skills and the
supervisor not been able to make a reasonable and intelligent decision on
the spot, an ugly incident could have occurred. As is, the incident makes
for an entertaining story. Had this happened to me a year earlier I know
the story would have been a lot uglier.

a

are there any good facilities in town that can hold up to 200 people
AND have wireless infrastructure in place for meeting/demo type
activities? Strictly 802.11.

OK, brain's been working overtime...

I'm doing some work on industrial platforms and rigs that have starband
in place for cable tv and internet. Starband requires some proprietary
windows based software (proprietary compression, and perhaps some
validation activity). Currently the starband software's running on =
spare
windows boxen, and they're doing ok with those. But they take up space,
and they're noisy, and they're big and they're in the way.

What's a solid appliancebox a la openbrick that I can put windows and =
the
starband drivers on and replace the bigboxen? I'm looking for single
supply (so maybe can use batterypower), no moving parts, get it working
then velcro it up in a corner or under a shelf and fuggedabboudit. =20

Oh, and did I mention it is going to be used to run the starband
software, so it needs two 10BaseT ports.

These are going on industrial platforms, so they can't be too fragile.

Along these same lines, does anyone know of good rugged lightweight =
'thin
clients' that I can put LTSP on for the web surfing rooms?

thx,

Lee

I am looking for an external modem. It doesn't have to be fast, it will be a fax machine so 14.4 is all it will ever do. Free would be nice :) but I have some parts I can trade, I.E. ISA modems that work well with Linux. -- Greg Madden Precision Air Balance, Inc. Phone:907-276-0461 email: pabi@gci.net
