Samba date stamp problem

I've been reading the manual, searching google, and so far haven't found
the answer so thought I would try here. I've found similar questions on
groups.google but no answers to them.

The problem is preserving the files' time of creation/modification time
stamps. When I copy them (via Windows explorer or ftp) to the share, the
date stamp is updated to current.

I transfered a them from a Win2k box to a Samba share on basically a
Redhat 6.2 server. A strange twist is some files/directories kept the
original times, but I can't duplicate that now.

I had some trouble setting group permissions on them (who should own
files accessible by a group or two?) but finally got it to work, but
don't know if this has anything to do with the price of tea or not..

I've got a similar question into the samba newsgroup, but nobody has
taken the bait yet there..

cheers,
Jim
