Subject: sound in X and other X questions

hey all .. i just rebuilt my custom fBSD kernel this time and i added sound *yippee* ... it worked cause in shell i can play cd's .. but in X .. im trying to get XMMS workin and it just wont work ... it says couldnt open audio 1.You have the correct output plugin selected 2. No other porgrams is blocki9ng the soundcard 3. Your soundcard is configured properly .... nothing works in X at all so im assuming its not the plugin ... but about some other program blockin .. i dont think so .. i ps -aux and didnt see anything...
ok .. second question ..this will be simple fo everyone except me ..
anywayz ... i have a fairly dumb question .. but for some reason i keep gettin confused...
ok .. i run GNOME (i have ran blackbox and kde but like GNOME)
when i installed i did the GNOME+Enlightenment ..
but i changed the window manager to twm .. my question is
what exactly do you call GNOME .. if Enlightenment is the window manager
what is GNOME? anyhelp ? thanx ahead of time
