If you have no experience with Linux, I would recommend Mandrake Linux.
You can download it at www.mandrake.com if you have a CD burner, or you
can buy the retail boxed version at CompUSA (same as the download
version, but with snazzy documentation and stuff - the retail version
also comes with some extra programs, iirc), or someone from AKLUG might
be able to burn you a copy.

Documents are very well taken care of with OpenOffice.org or StarOffice
(both are MS Office compatible). I use GPhoto with my digital camera,
and it works very well. I don't know about geneology software, but
perhaps someone on the list knows about this..? Not sure what UT is,
but XMMS is a media player like WinAmp, and can to streaming audio off
the net. There is also RealPlayer for Linux as well so you can do
RealAudio and RealVideo. For internet, I prefer Mozilla, but there are
about a half a dozen other excellent browzers out there you can also try
(konquerer, galeon, opera, etc)

As for hardware, I've not had much expereince with store-bought PCs
(Compaq, Gateway, etc) but I have a PII 233 with 128meg of RAM that runs
Linux just fine, so you should be good to go there.

Justin

P.S. I forwarded this to the regular AKLUG list, so hopefully someone
there can help as well.
