I think I found the cause of my problem. I took the hard drive out and
put it in another computer and it gave me the same symptom of no hard
drive found. My assessment is the hard drive simply failed and could
not have been prevented. Ironic since we just had this discussion of
how unreliable IDE hard drives are.
