Thanks to Justin I finally got this working...I also finally found the
install docs on Sun's website...sheeesh. The basic overview is this:

Download the file. I used the rpm of course.
Change the file to be executable.
Execute the script. This makes you accept a license and creates the rpm
file
Run the rpm. rpm -ivh <rpmname>
Start the OpenOffice install. After untaring the OpenOffice file run
./install/setup
When it gets to the install java part, browse to the /usr/java/jre-1.4.0
directory.

VIOLA! it works!
