Subject: SuSE 8.0 users/line editing problem

If you have a moment, could you confirm the following
behaviour for me?
Bash-2.0.5 (and Bash-2.04) under SuSE 8.0 "out of the box"
/deletes/ the character under the cursor instread of
replacing (the "r" command) when line editing in vi mode.
I have asked the suse list about this with no reply so
far. If you can confirm, I may forward this as a bug
and perhaps check with comp.unix.shell.
This problem is actually stopping me moving from 7.1
to 8.0--I usually have around eight xterms up (under
windowmaker) and line editing is a convenience too
comfortable to give up. Curiously enough, this
problem does not show up under a Korn shell.
Rebuilding bash-2.0.5 under SuSE 7.1 also works
fine, so it is something 8.0 specific.
One of the problems in trying to debug this problem
is the huge number of files that SuSE likes to source
at login. When did things get so damn complicated?
It's worse than debugging SVR3/4 printing!
In case you don't know, you can confirm by--
1. Starting a shell session (an xterm under X);
2. Issuing "set -o vi" if you don't use vi style
editing already;
3. Typing, say, "dddddd"
4. Hitting Esc then "hhh" to place the cursor under
the fourth "d";
5. Typing "r" followed by, say, "P";
6. The "d" should change to a "P". What happens to
me is that the "d" is deleted!
I can't believe the problem is unique to my machine,
and your help is much appreciated.
Rgds,
