I see there are many certs. Cisco offers...my question is, which is best

to start out with? I'm looking to get something accomplished before I
get out of the army, so I'll need something that will get me a good job.

Start with CCNA, which is the certification that the ICND course prepares
you for. From there you can either go for CCNP or CCDP, depending on your
interests.

Also, there are websites where people have four- and five-router pods
accessible online, and you rent them by the hour. Rates are fairly
decent...$5 an hour with a $20 minimum. Sybex has a good simulation
software app, specifically for CCNA. I've seen fairly inexpensive kits on
eBay, but be really careful to get the cables with them (some of Cisco's
cables can run around $100 each). Of course, you can always go to a Cisco
Network Academy--there are two in town I know of (Charter and UAA). It'll
take you longer, but the information does tend to be more structured and
thorough.
