memory limit

I have an older Compaq Presario. I added 512MB of SDRAM memory and
when I turned it on it says 256MB. Is there any way to fix this
problem or is 256MB the limit? Someone said upgrading the bios would
fix it. If so do I have to get that from Compaq? Thanks.
